Potential measles exposure found in Jackson County emergency room - WILX

JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - The Jackson County Health Department is warning residents of a possible measles exposure.
The possible exposure is related to a case of measles in Washtenaw County, the Jackson County Health Department said Friday afternoon.
The measles virus can stay in the air for around two hours after an infected person leaves.
Anyone who was at the Henry Ford Jackson Hospital Emergency Department on March 10 may have been exposed. However, since 72 hours have passed, it's too late for vaccine prevention.
"Maintaining the health and wellbeing of our patients, team members and community is our top priority. We're working alongside health officials to ensure anyone who might've encountered this person in our facility has the proper guidance and support. Vaccinations are the absolute best line of defense against diseases like measles, and we strongly encourage anyone who's not been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible," Henry Ford Health said in response to the possible exposure.
Anyone who may have been exposed should monitor themselves for symptoms for 21 days. Anyone displaying symptoms should seek immediate medical care.
Symptoms include:
• High fever (may spike to over 104˚F).
• Cough.
• Runny nose.
• Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis).
• Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums and roof of the mouth (Koplik Spots) two to three days after symptoms begin.
• A rash that is red, raised, blotchy; usually starts on face, spreads to trunk, arms and legs three to five days after symptoms begin.
Measles is highly contagious. So contagious that 90% of unvaccinated people exposed will contract the virus.
The measles vaccine is incredibly effective. One dose is 93% effective, and a second dose is 97% effective.
