Tattoos and piercings
Tattoos are one of the most common body art practices done around the world. However, this mark on the body is not just permanent but also comes with a huge risk – of lethal and fatal infections.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a tattoo is a permanent mark or design made on your skin with pigments inserted through pricks into the skin's top layer. A hand-held machine pierces the skin repeatedly to form a design with the help of tiny ink droplets.
The process — which is done without anesthetics — causes a small amount of bleeding and slight to potentially significant pain.
Risks involved
According to health experts, a list of few health risks involved in getting tattoos are:
- Allergic reactions: Many people with sensitive skin can be allergic to tattoo dyes in different colours especially red, green, yellow, and blue. These dyes can cause an itchy rash and swelling at the site of the tattoo.
- Skin infections: It is possible to get a bacterial infection after getting the tattoo done. Also, some people can experience inflammation granuloma. Tattooing also can lead to keloids — raised areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue.
Bloodborne diseases: If the needle of the tattoo machine is contaminated and infected, it can cause various bloodborne viral diseases includingHepatitis B , C, and HIV, all of which can be lethal and life-threatening.- Burning or swelling at the tattoo sites
- Sepsis: It is a life-threatening illness that occurs in response to infections. It can result in organ failure and death.
