What Do California Otters and Virginia Opossums Have In Common? - Atlas Obscura What Do California Otters and Virginia Opossums Have In Common? - Atlas Obscura Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:04 PM PDT As the new coronavirus continues to wreak havoc, hopping from human to human, scientists have figured out how another perilous pathogen has been sliding from land to sea. Scientists have long known that disease-causing parasites play host hopscotch to survive. Now, researchers at the University of California, Davis, and colleagues have mapped the game as it's played by Sarcocystis neurona , a pathogen that causes brain swelling in sea otters, which often kills them. Off the West Coast, it turns out the parasite slips from opossums to otters by way of clams—a complex transmission chain that's exacerbated by human activity, according to a paper published recently in Scientific Reports . The years-long study entailed capturing more than 700 sea o...

Seattle researchers to study malaria drug treatment of coronavirus - KUOW News and Information Seattle researchers to study malaria drug treatment of coronavirus - KUOW News and Information Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:56 PM PDT A decades-old malaria drug -- that has recently prompted debate and confusion -- will be tested in Seattle and New York to see if it could treat coronavirus patients. Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are used to treat malaria (and sometimes other ailments such as lupus or arthritis). It is among potential treatments that UW Medicine is studying in response to the coronavirus pandemic. "We currently don't know if hydroxychloroquine works, but we will learn in as short a timeframe as possible what the outcome is," said principal investigator Ruanne Barnabas in a statement. Barnabas is an associate professor of global health in the University of Washington schools of Medicine and Public Health. T...

Ask The Vet Manage Goat Parasites - DTN The Progressive Farmer Ask The Vet Manage Goat Parasites - DTN The Progressive Farmer Posted: 23 Mar 2020 09:31 AM PDT If your veterinarian does not work with goats, find one who does. The American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners may be a good resource for you. They can be reached at 419-496-0696. I tell people that even if their goats are healthy, it's important to develop a relationship with a veterinarian before you need him or her. With intestinal parasites of sheep and goats, we need a new mindset. We need to be talking about parasite management. The question "What is the best dewormer?," is outdated. The worm most likely causing your problem is Haemonchus contortus, or the barber's pole worm. They are prolific bloodsuckers and egg shedders.
